2021 Topps Update Series Baseball

I have a lot of half finished posts so I didn't just buy this...this is from late 2021. I can't remember how much I paid for this, I think it was somewhere around $59. It didn't have a "hit" in the box so it really shows how much you are paying for a memorabilia card you could probably find in a dollar box 6 months later.

For those of you who have read a few posts of mine, you probably know that I am a set collector. I do spend a lot of time reading the "forums" and it seems that I am a dying breed. 

So here are the highlights of the base cards. "Worthless trash" I've heard them referenced as. 

There were a few numbered cards. This Seth Elledge was part of the Advanced Stats parallels and was numbered 268/300.

The Edwin Uceta was 600/2021 and the Matt Strahm was 1987/2021.

These are from the All-Star Game subset.

I'm a big fan of the 1993 Black Gold subset, so I liked seeing it revived for this. The Reggie is from the Cards That Never Were subset and the Eddie Murray is from the Platinum Player Die Cuts.

I pulled 6 of the 1986 Topps Inserts. 

As you can see, the 1992 Topps Inserts were quite plentiful...which is fine because I like them.

These are exclusive to retail packs, which means I purchased a retail box at my LCS.

The black Christian Yelich parallel was numbered 1/25 and the Mookie Betts red Chrome parallel was numbered 51/70. The Judge, Yelich and Hayes were Chrome parallels, while the Lincecum, deGrom and Mize were from the 70 years of Topps subset.

Currently I only have a few cards that I need to complete this set. Please check my want lists...if you have any of them I'd like to work out a trade if possible. Thanks for reading!

My last couple of posts featured the baseball version of this and both were quite horrible. I also had purchased the football version as well. Now there were no descriptions on the boxes of what was inside any of these and I can't remember if this was $8.99 as well. 

There was one pack in the box. Here it is. 

1990 Score. Outstanding. 

And that's it. I sincerely hope I didn't pay $8.99 for this. I thought I had bought these about a year ago, but I realized I actually purchased these at Walgreens at the end of 2021. I have not looked in a Walgreens for cards since then. To call these terrible would be an insult to all things terrible.

My last post featured this superbly awful Baseball Collector's Edge repack box. I mentioned I had purchased two of them, so unfortunately you're going to have to suffer through another one. You never know, this one could be better...or maybe not.

There was also a box of 49 commons. Why 49, I have no idea. 

At least there were a couple of older commons in this one. I suppose in this case ROI stands for Return On Idiocy. All for just $8.99.

Collector's Edge Baseball Repack Box

This was not a recent purchase. I bought these over a year ago and am just now putting a post together about it. There is no snow on the ground here, the picture is also over a year old. 

I got this at Walgreens at some point in the beginning of 2022. This was the first time I had seen cards there in quite some time. I had no idea what was in this box but it was $8.99. A bit steep...but I bought 2 baseball and 1 football. Here's the first baseball box.

First up was a pack of 1988 Fleer.

Riveting. 

The only other thing in the box was a small selection of random cards.

It started off okay with a 2018 Opening Day Ozzie Albies Rookie but quickly morphed into...

half of a Fairfield box...

...for almost twice the price.

That was it. $8.99. Wow.

Well first of all, here's the breakdown of the years included. These were all Topps cards from 1975 - 1990.

1975 - 15 cards

1976 - 2 cards

1977 - 5 cards

1978 - 10 cards

1979 - 14 cards

1980 - 11 cards

1981 - 2 cards

1982 - 25 cards

1983 - 13 cards

1984 - 13 cards

1985 - 10 cards

1986 - 9 cards

1987 - 9 cards

1988 - 11 cards

1990 - 2 cards

1982 and 1975 were the two years most represented in a box that was basically all commons. I did get a Mattingly and Bonds Rookie although after watching several videos of these being open leads me to believe that these were "participation trophies". I do understand that not every box is going to be good but they don't have to be this bad either. 

One thing I noticed is that in some cases the cards were almost numerical. For instance, I pulled 10 1978 cards. They weren't 10 random cards from the set but cards 307 - 318 (except for cards 310 and 314...Don Sutton and Paul Linblad). 10 of the 14 1979 cards were between cards 71 - 83. 

So the box gets an F from me. It's not something I would ever buy again. Usually one of the saving graces of these types of repack offerings is that they are fun to go through. This was not fun. Cue the throwing money out the window gif.

I think I'm being trolled. Not only am I getting 99% commons, I'm getting duplicates. I did get a 1984 Don Mattingly (which I didn't have) but so far this box has been horrifyingly bad. One of the things I don't understand about the YouTubers when I see them open products like this is their fascination with Hall of Famers. Yes, I got a Nolan Ryan and a Cal Ripken but it's 88 Topps. Who the f@#k cares? If you hoard cards like I do, you already have 30 of them.
